The Semicolon ;

People can use the semicolon in a variety of ways. A semicolon is used as a winky-face emoticon when placed with a parenthesis. As a punctuation mark, the semicolon is most often used to connect two independent clauses in place of using a conjunction like "but" or "and."

The semicolon is also a symbol used by the group Project Semicolon. Project Semicolon explains that "a semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life".[1] I believe this is a perfect description of the semicolon and an inspiration for those who need the reminder. Clearly, a phrase and a symbol will not simply end suicide or cure depression; it will bring awareness to the problem. That is a great step. Being aware of a problem is the first step towards healing.

Sometimes just knowing there are people in your corner can be the difference between getting help and suffering alone. I know there are times when you can feel very alone, even in a room full of people. Project Semicolon believes no one should have to face a mental health problem alone.

The time for mental health to be brought to the forefront is far passed. I love the philosophy of Project Semicolon. Check out their webpage and read some of the stories. Sign up and share your own story.

The sentiment, "a semicolon is used when an author could have chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to" will stick with me. It is powerful. Be your author and chose to continue the sentence. You matter. You are important. "Your story isn't over."
